The model can be used to identify the competencies leaders or employees at any level need to develop to improve performance in their current job or to prepare for other jobs via promotion or transfer.

The competency modeling process results in clearly defined competencies for specific jobs, along with behavioral indicators, which can be used in the goal setting and coaching process, as well as incorporated into the overall human resource management system from recruiting and hiring to performance management and succession planning.
